What to pack for Sipadan
The short list that matters, the things people forget, and what to leave at home because the island will not let you use it anyway.

Documents and the things you cannot dive without
Passport and certification card. Both are checked against the permit list at the Sipadan jetty by rangers. A clear photo or printed copy of each is accepted by most operators for the jetty check — but bring the physical cards to the resort, because the resort check-in wants originals. Logbook, physical or app. Guides use it to place you on sites; no record means the conservative sites.

Medical clearance if you answer yes to anything on the standard medical questionnaire. Resorts will ask.
Cash. There is no ATM on Mabul. Bring RM300–600 for tips, drinks, gear rental and the island jetty fee. Cards work at the resorts for larger amounts, not for small ones.
What to bring and what to rent
Bring your own: mask (rentals never fit), dive computer (required, and yours knows your profile), a surface marker buoy with reel — currents at Sipadan separate groups and you should not rely on the guide’s — a small torch for the cavern entrance and Mabul crevices, and a 3 mm shorty or full wetsuit. Water is 27–30 °C but three dives a day for five days gets cold by the end.
Rent if you must: BCD, regulator and fins are available at RM60–100 per day at most resorts, tanks and weights are included in every package. Quality is fine for a week; own kit is better for a trip you have planned this far ahead.
Leave at home: gloves — banned on Sipadan and at most resorts to stop reef contact. Reef hooks, same reason. Spearfishing anything, obviously.
Photographers: Sipadan is wide-angle, Mabul is macro; bring both or pick the trip you are shooting. Spare O-rings and silica gel — humidity is total. Batteries and chargers: resort power runs on generators, so a surge protector is sensible.
Topside
Reef-safe sunscreen only — Sabah Parks prohibits oxybenzone and octinoxate in the park. Buy it before you fly; island shops are thin. Better still, a long-sleeved rash guard and a hat, which the equatorial sun on a boat deck will make you grateful for by day two.
Clothes: less than you think. Resorts are barefoot-casual; two or three sets of light clothes, a light layer for boat mornings before dawn on permit days, and something with sleeves for evenings when mosquitoes appear.
Medicine: your own prescriptions, seasickness tablets if the Semporna crossing worries you, ear drops, antiseptic for coral scrapes, rehydration salts. The resort clinic is a first-aid kit; the hospital is an hour away.
Connectivity: resort wifi is slow and shared. Download anything you need before Tawau. A Malaysian SIM (from Tawau airport) usually outperforms the wifi on Mabul.
Do not pack: drones without checking — the security zone restricts them and resorts enforce it. Anything you cannot afford to lose on a boat.
The one item people regret leaving: the SMB. The one they regret bringing: gloves they cannot use. Everything else is recoverable.
