Diving in Borneo: where to go and why Sabah wins

Borneo is three countries and two coasts. For diving, almost all of the reasons to come are on one short stretch of Sabah’s south-east coast — and one island off it.

In shortThe best diving in Borneo is concentrated in the Semporna archipelago of Sabah, Malaysia: Sipadan for walls and large marine life, Mabul and Kapalai for macro. Fly to Tawau. Verified August 2026.

The geography

Where Borneo’s diving actually is

Borneo is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, and its coastline runs for thousands of kilometres — but the diving worth flying for is concentrated. The Malaysian state of Sabah on the island’s northern tip holds nearly all of it, and within Sabah, the Semporna archipelago on the south-east coast holds the sites that put Borneo on the diving map.

That concentration is good news for planning. One flight into Tawau, one road transfer, one boat, and you are at the centre of the best diving on the island with Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai all within an hour of each other. The getting there guide maps the chain.

City diving

Easy reef diving twenty minutes from the state capital — fine for a check dive or a course, not a destination in itself. Useful if you have a KK layover on the way to Semporna.

Niche

Wreck diving off Miri and Brunei for enthusiasts; Indonesian Borneo’s Derawan and Sangalaki for mantas, reached from the Indonesian side with different logistics entirely. Worth knowing about; not competing for a Sabah trip.

The Borneo trip

Combining diving with the rest of Borneo

This is where Borneo beats every other dive destination in Asia: what you do on the days you are not diving. Sepilok’s orangutans, the Kinabatangan river, Danum Valley’s primary rainforest and Mount Kinabalu are all in Sabah, all reachable from the same Tawau–Sandakan–KK triangle, and all compatible with the no-fly rule if you sequence them after the diving rather than before.

The classic build: Semporna first for the diving, then road or short flight to Sandakan for Sepilok and the Kinabatangan, then out through KK. Seven to ten days does it properly. We arrange the diving half; ask and we will point you to the right people for the jungle half.

For the diving half, the plan is unchanged whatever else the trip includes: book the Sipadan permit days first, because they are the constraint everything else bends around. How permits work · package rates.
