Last-minute Sipadan permits: possible, not promised
Permits do free up — cancellations, illness, weather reshuffles. Whether one lands on you depends on where you are staying and how fast you can say yes.

Can you get a Sipadan permit last minute?
Sometimes. Permits are date-specific and allocated to resorts in fixed daily blocks, so there is no reserve pool and nothing sold on the day at the jetty. What exists is churn: guests cancel, fall ill, miss flights, or lose a day to weather, and the permit they held goes back to the resort's dive manager to reassign.
Those reassignments happen fast and locally. The diver who gets the freed slot is almost always someone already on the island, already checked out on the house reef, who told the dive manager they would take any day at any notice. It is very rarely someone emailing from abroad.
So the honest answer splits in two. If you are asking from home: we can check real availability with our operating partner within one working day — sometimes weeks that look full are not, especially off-peak. If you are already in Semporna or on Mabul: your best move is a room-plus-diving booking and a standing yes with the dive manager.
One rule protects you from the common scam: nobody legitimate sells standalone last-minute permits at a premium. A permit only exists attached to a licensed operator's package. Anyone offering otherwise is selling you a story.
How last-minute permits actually get picked up
1. Be on the island already
Book a Mabul and Kapalai package without a Sipadan day. You dive world-class muck sites while you wait, and you are first in line when a slot frees. If nothing frees, you still had an excellent trip at RM1,500–2,500 less than the Sipadan package.
2. Tell the dive manager on day one
Not the front desk — the dive manager. Say you will take any Sipadan slot, any day, at any notice, and that you are checked out and ready. Then dive well on your check dive, because competence is part of the calculation when a slot needs filling at 20:00 for a 05:30 boat.
3. Target the churn windows
December to February has the most cancellations relative to bookings. Shoulder weeks just outside the peak windows also shed slots as group bookings firm up and shrink. See best time to dive Sipadan.
4. Ask us before assuming it's full

Can I buy a Sipadan permit on arrival in Semporna?
No. Permits exist only inside licensed operators' allocations. What you can do on arrival is position yourself for a freed slot by staying with an operator and making yourself available.

Constantly in small numbers — cancellations, illness and weather reshuffles are routine. Whether one reaches you depends on being present, available and diving-ready.
Should I pay extra for a "guaranteed" last-minute permit?
No. Premium-priced standalone permits are the local scam. Legitimate operators reassign freed permits to their own guests, not to the highest bidder.
Is next week realistically bookable?
Off-peak, sometimes yes through normal channels — ask us and we check. Peak season, a freed slot on the island is the realistic route.
