What Semporna is
Semporna is a working fishing and trading town on the south-east coast of Sabah, about 75 minutes by road from Tawau airport. Its name means "perfect" in Malay, which the town itself would not claim: it is busy, functional and salt-stained, built around a waterfront of jetties, seafood restaurants and dive-shop offices. Nobody comes for Semporna. Everybody comes through it.
For a Sipadan trip its role is exact. Resort boats leave the town jetty at 10:00 and 12:30 for Mabul and Kapalai and return at 11:00 and 13:30 — timings that decide whether your flight into Tawau connects the same day or costs you a night. The getting there guide works through the arithmetic.
It is also the base for the Tun Sakaran Marine Park to the north-east — Bohey Dulang, Sibuan, Mantabuan — the postcard sandbars and lagoon that fill the non-diving day trips and the Instagram feeds. Different direction from Sipadan, different trip, worth a day if you have one to spare on the way out.
Sleeping in Semporna or Tawau
Miss the 12:30 boat and you sleep on the mainland. The choice is between Semporna itself — closer to the morning boat, more atmosphere, thinner hotel stock — and Tawau, which has better hotels and is the right call if your flight lands late in the afternoon anyway.
Semporna: a handful of mid-range hotels on the waterfront township and a deep bench of hostels aimed at backpacker divers, RM60–250 a night. The stilted waterfront hotels are the memorable option; the town-centre business hotels are the reliable one. Tawau: RM120–250 for a decent business hotel near the town centre, with an early transfer to Semporna the next morning arranged through the resort. Less character, more sleep.
Either way, eat seafood. Semporna’s waterfront restaurants sell what came off the boats that afternoon at prices that will embarrass your home city, and the lobster and grouper are the local argument for staying the night on purpose.
What to do in Semporna before the boat
Money. Withdraw cash here — there are ATMs in town and none on Mabul. See the packing guide for how much.
Jetty fee. A small per-person jetty fee is collected at the Semporna waterfront; most packages include it, and it is a few ringgit if not.
Supplies. Pharmacies, sunscreen (check for reef-safe — stock is patchy), snacks, a Malaysian SIM if you skipped Tawau airport. The island shops are minimal.
Security. Semporna sits inside the Eastern Sabah Security Zone; the police and ESSCOM presence is visible and unremarkable. Walk the waterfront in daylight without concern; use normal city sense after dark. The safety guide covers the regional picture.
Regatta Lepa. If your dates fall in April, the town’s annual festival of decorated Bajau boats is worth planning around — the one week a year Semporna is a destination rather than a transit.

How far is Semporna from Sipadan?
About 35 km. Resort boats do not go direct — you transfer to Mabul or Kapalai first, then take the resort’s permit-day boat to Sipadan from there.
Do I need to stay in Semporna?
Not if your Tawau flight lands in time for the 12:30 boat. Miss it and you overnight in Semporna or Tawau.
How do I get from Tawau to Semporna?
By road, about 75 minutes. Resort packages include the transfer; taxis and shuttles run for independent travellers.
Is Semporna safe?
Yes, with normal city sense. It sits inside the ESSCOM security zone with a visible police presence, and thousands of divers pass through every month.
