When you need a Sipadan alternative
Three situations bring people to this page: the permit calendar is full for their dates, it is November and the island is closed, or the budget says the RM1,500–2,500 premium for permit days is better spent on more nights of diving. All three have the same good answer, because the accident of geography that made Sipadan famous also made its neighbours excellent.
Be clear about the trade: nothing below replaces the wall, the tornado or the reef sharks. What the alternatives offer is a different trip — macro instead of pelagics, patience instead of current — that many divers, particularly photographers, actively prefer. Is diving Mabul as good as Sipadan?
Different, and for macro photographers often better. Sipadan is walls, schools and sharks; Mabul is rare small creatures at close range. Most full trips include both.

Can I add a Sipadan day later if one frees up?
