Why Mabul is a genuinely good place to certify
Course quality is mostly about the training site, and Mabul’s is unusual: two to six metres of calm, warm, clear water over sand — ideal for skills — sitting on a reef where the "boring" training dives pass frogfish and turtles. Students here log course dives that would count as highlight dives elsewhere.
The practical draw is the pipeline: certify in the first days, dive Sipadan in the last ones, one trip. That only works if the package is long enough, which is the single planning mistake to avoid — courses eat diving days.
Courses and how they fit a trip
The Sipadan unlock and the most-taught course on the island. Five adventure dives including deep and navigation — do the drift adventure dive here, since drift technique is what Sipadan actually demands. Fits a 6D5N: certify days 2–3, Sipadan days 4–5. On anything shorter it consumes the diving you came for. Full requirements.
Learn from zero in the best confined-water conditions in Malaysia. Know the arithmetic before booking: OW alone does not reach Sipadan, so a from-zero-to-Sipadan trip means OW + AOW + permit days — realistically eight nights and two courses. For most beginners the better plan is OW at home, AOW here.
Drift, deep, nitrox and photography specialties run on demand. The drift specialty is the sleeper pick for anyone whose logbook is all calm house reefs — Barracuda Point rewards it directly. Note nitrox is a Mabul tool, not a Sipadan one: see the caution in requirements.
If your last dive was over a year ago, do this on arrival day rather than negotiating about it on the boat. Some operators fold it into the check dive; ask when booking.
Professional-level training on a world-class reef, with one Sipadan-specific caveat to hear before committing: permits are scarce enough that DM candidates do not routinely dive Sipadan as part of training — staff queue for permits like guests. Come for Mabul’s teaching environment, not for unlimited Sipadan.
The course-plus-Sipadan trip, planned right
Already Open Water certified: book 6D5N, AOW on days 2–3, two Sipadan permit days after. This is the standard build and it works.
Never dived: either certify OW at home and run the build above, or allow eight-plus nights here for both courses. We will price both honestly — the at-home OW route is usually cheaper and gives you logged dives before the wall.
Certified but rusty: refresher on arrival day, standard package otherwise. Costs half a day, saves the trip.

Can I do my Advanced Open Water course and dive Sipadan on the same trip?
Yes — the standard build is a 6D5N package with the course on days two and three and Sipadan permit days after. Shorter packages force a choice between the course and the diving.
How much is the AOW course on Mabul?
Indicatively RM1,200–1,600 including course dives and materials, confirmed at booking. It takes two diving days.
Can a complete beginner learn to dive and see Sipadan in one trip?
Physically yes with eight-plus nights and both courses; practically, certifying Open Water at home first makes for a cheaper and better trip.
Do divemaster trainees get to dive Sipadan?
Not routinely. Permits are scarce enough that professionals queue like guests. Choose Mabul for its training environment, not for Sipadan access.
