The MV Celebes Explorer (the current hull is the CE9, launched 2019) is a roughly thirty-metre purpose-built dive boat with eight air-conditioned ensuite cabins for up to sixteen divers. Its structural advantage is simple: it holds its own daily Sipadan permit allocation, so a multi-night cruise dives Sipadan on most mornings — the thing every resort guest is rationing permits for, the boat does routinely. Days run up to four dives, splitting Sipadan's walls with Mabul and Kapalai muck and the soft-coral slopes of Si Amil, a site resort day-boats rarely reach. Cruises run roughly three to seven nights on fixed departure days out of Semporna, with buffet meals aboard and cash-only extras.
The catch is equally simple, and the 2026 guest reviews are candid about it. Cabins are functional rather than plush. The first and last days are mostly logistics, and the boat spends its turnaround nights in Semporna's working port — reviewers use words like "noisy". Several note that a shorter cruise would have delivered the same dive count. None of them dispute the headline: as one 2026 review puts it, you get Sipadan every single day.

Run the numbers the way a dive-obsessed diver would. Our best resort package for Sipadan time is the 6D5N with two permit days at RM6,550–6,830 — call it roughly RM3,300 per Sipadan day. A week on the boat at the top of its range, with Sipadan diving on most of four to five diving days, lands nearer RM1,500–2,000 per Sipadan day. If your only metric is mornings at Barracuda Point, the liveaboard is the rational choice and we will not pretend otherwise.
The reason most divers still book resorts is that almost nobody's only metric is that. Add a partner who snorkels, a preference for a real bed and a shower that is not shared with fifteen divers' wetsuits, dates that do not match the boat's fixed departures, or a budget closer to RM4,000 than RM8,000 — and the resort column wins on every line that is not raw Sipadan count.
You are an AOW-or-better diver travelling with divers, Sipadan volume is the entire point, your dates can bend to fixed departures, and you will trade cabin comfort and port nights for wall time without resentment. Book it well ahead — sixteen berths on the only boat is a scarcer resource than any resort's permit allocation.

Mixed diver and non-diver groups, first big trips after certification, honeymoons wanting the over-water chalets, flexible dates, shorter stays, or simply a firm published price with the permit day confirmed in writing before you pay — that is the resort model, and it is what we sell.
